How to Choose an Astrocartography App: 7 Things to Check

Astrocartography apps differ far less in their maths than in their usability. Every competent tool draws the same forty lines from the same birth data. What separates them is whether you can actually read the result: filtering, zoom, distance measurement, parans, and honest handling of birth-time uncertainty.

Seven things to check before you commit

  1. Time-zone handling. The tool should ask for your birth city and resolve the historical time zone and daylight saving itself. Anything that asks you to enter a UTC offset is pushing the most common source of error onto you.
  2. Planet filtering. A map with forty lines is unusable. You must be able to switch individual planets on and off. This is the single most important usability feature.
  3. Real zoom. Line influence is strong within about 100 km and clearly weaker past 300 km, so you need to zoom to city level and see how far a place actually sits from a line. Static images fail this test.
  4. Paran lines. Vertical lines miss most of the world. Tools that also compute paran latitudes give you options near where you already live.
  5. Angle labelling. Lines should be labelled with both planet and angle — Venus DC, not just "Venus". Without the angle, the line cannot be interpreted.
  6. Which bodies are included. Some tools plot Chiron and the lunar nodes, others stop at Pluto. Neither is wrong, but it explains why two maps of the same birth can look different.
  7. What it does with an unknown birth time. An honest tool warns you that angular lines are unreliable without a time. One that silently defaults to 12:00 noon and shows confident lines is misleading you.

App, web tool, or desktop software?

  • Mobile apps are the best fit for exploration: pinch-zoom, quick filtering, and the map in your pocket while you are actually travelling.
  • Web calculators are good for a one-off look and for sharing a link, but many render a static image you cannot zoom.
  • Professional desktop software gives the deepest control — custom orbs, extra bodies, relocation charts side by side — at the cost of a steep learning curve. Worth it if you read charts for other people.

Free versus paid

Drawing the lines is astronomy, and astronomy is not a premium feature. A free tool that resolves your time zone correctly produces exactly the same lines as an expensive one. What money buys is interpretation, saved charts, higher-resolution maps, relocation charts, and support. Decide which of those you actually need before paying for a map you could have got for nothing.

  • No birth time field at all, or a silent default.
  • Lines shown without angle labels.
  • A static image with no zoom.
  • Country-level "best places" rankings — no chart can distinguish two towns on the same line.
