Reading an astrocartography map is a five-step routine: identify the angle labels, filter down to one goal, measure your distance from the nearest line, check for crossings, and only then interpret. Most people skip straight to interpretation, which is why a map with forty lines on it feels unreadable.
Every line on the map carries two pieces of information — a planet and an angle. A line labelled VE DC is Venus on the Descendant. JU MC is Jupiter on the Midheaven. The four angle codes:
AC and DC lines curve; MC and IC lines run almost straight north to south. That curvature is normal and comes from the projection, not from an error.
Forty lines is too many to reason about. Turn off every planet except the two or three that relate to your actual question. Looking for work? Leave Jupiter, Sun and Saturn on. Looking for a relationship? Venus, Moon and Mars. Everything else is noise until the first question is answered.
A line is not a wall. Its influence is strongest on the line itself, still clearly present within about 100 km (60 miles), and noticeably weaker past roughly 300 km. When people say a line "didn't work", the cause is usually that they were 500 km away from it. Zoom in and check the actual distance before drawing conclusions.

If the sentence does not describe something you want more of, the line is not for you — regardless of whether the planet has a good reputation.
Midheaven and Imum Coeli lines are meridians and appear as near-straight north–south lines. Ascendant and Descendant lines follow the horizon, which projects onto a flat map as a curve. Both are correct.
Both planets are angular at that spot, so the effects combine and intensify. A crossing is the strongest kind of location in astrocartography, for better or worse depending on the planets.
