What is Astrocartography (Locational Astrology)?

Ever feel a strong pull to a certain place, or feel different when you travel? That’s what Astrocartography, also called locational astrology, is about.

Started by astrologer Jim Lewis, it uses your birth chart (a map of the sky when you were born) and puts it on a world map. This shows specific ‘planetary lines’ around the world.

These lines point to places where the Sun, Moon, and planets might have had a stronger effect on you when you were born. This happens where they lined up with four key points: Ascendant (AC), Midheaven (MC), Descendant (DC), and Imum Coeli (IC).

The basic thought is that places near these lines might connect more strongly with parts of your life.

How to Read Your Astrocartography Map

Understanding your map involves looking at the lines, the angles they connect to, and the planets involved.

  1. Identify Lines: Each line across the map links a Planet (e.g., Venus ♀, Jupiter ♃) to an Angle (AC, DC, IC, MC). Check the map key for symbols.
  2. Look for Angle Labels: Next to the planet symbol on each line, you’ll see AC, DC, IC, or MC. These tell you which area of life the planet’s energy impacts near that line.

Understanding the Angles (AC, DC, IC, MC)

AC

AC (Ascendant)

Influences your identity, self-expression, and how others might see you in that location.

DC

DC (Descendant)

Relates to your significant one-on-one relationships and partnerships connected to that location.

IC

IC (Imum Coeli)

Affects your sense of home, family, roots, and private emotional life about that location.

MC

MC (Midheaven)

Connects to your career, public reputation, ambitions, and achievements associated with that location.

Combine Planet + Angle

The real insight comes from combining the planet’s meaning with the angle’s life area:

  • A Venus/DC line suggests locations where themes of love, harmony, and attraction (Venus) might be strong within your partnerships (DC).
  • A Jupiter/MC line could indicate places offering luck or expansion (Jupiter) related to your career or public standing (MC).
  • A Moon/IC line might point to areas where you feel emotionally connected (Moon) to your home and private life (IC).

Note the Locations

See which cities, regions, or countries the lines pass through or near. The influence is generally considered strongest directly on the line and fades gradually with distance.

Quick Planetary Meanings

  • Sun = visibility & purpose
  • Venus = love & money
  • Jupiter = growth & luck
  • Moon = comfort & mood
  • Mars = drive & conflict
  • Saturn = lessons & discipline

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Think of it as your personal astrology birth chart overlaid onto a world map. It draws lines showing where specific planetary energies might be more prominent for you, potentially influencing different areas of your life like career, relationships, or sense of home, depending on the location.

Very accurate! The positions of the lines, especially the crucial Angle lines (AC, DC, IC, MC), depend heavily on your exact time of birth. Please use the most precise time available for the best results.

While an exact time gives the most detailed map (especially for angles), you might still find some general insights from planetary lines if your time is approximate. However, the map's precision, particularly concerning the angles (AC, DC, IC, MC), will be significantly reduced.

It's more nuanced than 'good' or 'bad.' Each line represents different themes. Lines like Jupiter or Venus are often associated with ease or opportunity, while lines like Saturn or Pluto might signify challenges but also offer potential for major growth and transformation. It depends on your goals and how you work with the energy.

The effect is strongest directly on the line and gradually diminishes with distance. Many feel the influence within a few hundred miles/kilometers. A common guide:

  • < 100 km (60 mi) — Maximum strength
  • 100–300 km — Noticeable
  • 300–500 km — Weak

Effects fade significantly beyond roughly 500 km.

Not at all! Use it for travel planning, understanding feelings about places, insight into existing connections (family location, alma mater), or simply learning more about your geographical connections.

A crossing (or paran) indicates two planets hitting angles simultaneously in that location, blending their energies. For example, a Sun-MC × Venus-ASC crossing might combine career visibility (Sun-MC) with personal charm and relationship benefits (Venus-ASC) in that area.

These 'Angles' show how a planet's energy might manifest:

  • AC (Ascendant): Self-expression, Persona, How You Appear
  • DC (Descendant): Relationships, Partnerships, One-on-One Interactions
  • IC (Imum Coeli): Home, Roots, Family, Private Life, Inner Foundation
  • MC (Midheaven): Career, Public Image, Reputation, Life Direction

No. Astrocartography highlights potential energies, themes, and psychological influences linked to locations based on your birth chart. It's a guide to potential and environmental influence, not a fortune-telling tool.

Astrocartography suggests personalized locations. For finding a place to live, focus on lines impacting the IC angle (home/roots). Favorable lines often include Moon IC, Venus IC, Jupiter IC, or Sun IC. Crucially, consider how these planets function in your unique natal chart first – challenging natal placements can alter the experience even on a 'good' line.
